UPSC Prelims Syllabus 2022

 

Starting off with the UPSC Prelims syllabus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you if I say that the syllabus is pretty vast in its own right.

However, the UPSC Prelims examination is basically conducted for the purpose of screening only. Thus if you clear the Prelims exam, you will be eligible for the Mains exam.

Also, your Prelims marks will not be considered in your final order of merit, provided you manage to make it through to the interview round.

The UPSC prelims examination comprises 2 papers, namely the General studies paper and the CSAT paper or the Civil Services Aptitude Test.


UPSC Prelims Syllabus for Paper 1: General Studies (GS)

This GS paper or paper 1 is designed to test your overall knowledge about your surroundings and the world, and also to test how observant you are as a person, by asking questions related to current affairs.

The UPSC prelims syllabus for the GS paper consists of topics from a wide range of subjects making it extremely difficult to pinpoint the kind of questions that might be asked in the upcoming paper.


UPSC Prelims Syllabus for Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

The CSAT or Paper 2 is conducted with the intention to test your reasoning, comprehension, and analytical abilities.

This is because, as a Civil Servant it is of paramount importance that you are able to perceive the world and the problems therein with utmost precision and rationality.

The CSAT paper includes questions from the subjects of Reasoning & Analysis and Reading Comprehension. It also occasionally tests your decision-making skills by asking you questions pertaining to the same.

Rest assured, the decision-making-based questions do not carry negative marking.

How to Optimally Utilize Suggested UPSC Books

  It should be noted that the UPSC Syllabus is vast, and therefore, it takes a minimum duration of at least a year to read through comprehensively. Thus, make sure that you do not waste precious time reading from books that are not up to the mark or are below standard. By below standard, I mean books that might contain unauthenticated or incorrect information. Make sure to take notes while reading from the IAS books that I have listed for you above. There are some excellent IAS books for preparation like Laxmikanth, & the NCERTs. Books such as these are tailor-made for the UPSC exams. This is because a lot of questions related to the subject of polity are asked directly from this book. These are the kind of books that you should read as thoroughly as possible. UPSC Cutoff

UPSC Cut off Let’s go through some of the important points based on how the Cut off for the UPSC is calculated:   The  marks of Prelims Cut off  are  based on paper 1 of the prelims  or the GS paper  only . The marks that you secure in Paper 2 will not be considered when counting your merit ranking.  Paper 2 is qualifying in nature  and you need to  score at least 33 % in it to qualify for the Mains  round. The  cut off marks  for the UPSC basically are the  marks secured that the last candidate  that was selected for that round. The cut off marks for both the UPSC rounds of Prelims and Mains are released only after the final IAS results of the exams for the year are declared.
